In September 1992, the owner of one of Britain’s most successful touring car teams found himself at the centre of a major drugs investigation. With Vic Lee remanded in custody, sponsors threatening to walk away and BMW considering its future, Vic Lee Motorsport faced a fight simply to survive.
Just two years earlier, Vic Lee Motorsport had been a relatively modest operation running a single BMW M3 in the British Touring Car Championship. By the end of 1991, it had established itself as one of the strongest teams in the paddock, taking Will Hoy to the first championship of the new two-litre era.
The following season, Tim Harvey and Steve Soper were tasked with developing BMW’s new 318is. After a difficult start, the team eventually unlocked the car’s potential, with Harvey embarking on a remarkable run of victories that brought him firmly into contention for the championship.
Then, on 8th September 1992, everything changed.
Vic Lee was arrested in connection with a major cocaine smuggling investigation, with drugs having been discovered concealed inside a racing transporter. The news sent shockwaves through the BTCC paddock and left the future of his team hanging in the balance.
For those working at VLM, the immediate concern was whether they would even be allowed to finish the season.
“All the sponsors wanted to run a mile, BMW included. That was their first reaction, distance yourself completely,” Harvey recalled during an interview with Stories From SuperTouring.
The next race was at Donington Park, just twelve days after Lee’s arrest. The team travelled to the circuit, but there was no guarantee that BMW would permit the cars to compete.
Steve Soper remembered just how uncertain the situation had become.
“Getting BMW to agree to let us carry on was a huge effort. They didn’t want to see those cars. We pleaded with them to let us carry on with the championship.”
With the trucks and team personnel assembled at Donington, Soper recalled waiting for the final decision.
“We were waiting for a phone call to say, ‘No, you’re not allowed to race,’ or ‘Yes, carry on.’ And we got the yes.”
What followed became one of the most remarkable chapters in BTCC history.
